What can you skip?
- A milling machine. Most first projects are round, and the lathe can face, drill, bore and thread. Buy a mill when a real project needs flats or slots, not before.
- A DRO. The handwheel dials and a caliper are enough until you know which axis you actually lose track of.
- Large carbide insert sets. A few ground HSS blanks do more on a mini lathe at low speed than a box of inserts meant for industrial spindles.
